I think it's safe to say that AVG and avast! are the overall best choices for free antivirus softwares (good protection, light weighted, good update rates, ...). That's at least what I can grap from the many antivirus comparatives, these two are always around the top.

As Lyle already has posted the link to AVG, I'll, just paste the link to avast!:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I've personally been using avast! for a few years now, and I've always been satisfied with it... after having disabled the program sounds!

I used the AVG free service, but then it told me that i needed to upgrade to version 8 which you have to pay for, well you should have to pay for anyway...

I've had both AVG and Avast and I would say that Avast was the better one of the two...

AVG does that every 6 months, just go to their website and download the latest free version.

I swear by AVG, and regularly use it at work to clean up infected machines which were supposedly "protected" by Nortons corporate software.

And yes, AVG takes a while to scan, because it actually scans all the files, it doesn't just look for one's that have changed since the last time

As you always hear - the best things in life are free

NOD32 is known to be good, but unfortunately it isn't free.
And with the existing free solutions being of a very good quality, I would only recommend one from the free anti-virus we've discussed earlier in this topic.
