the plate just seems a bit pointless to me why cant we just have one cup.

not really it gives the other clans a chance to win something rather than D&C or UT winning all the time.

The plate was created, as james said, to give more clans something to play for. The idea is a little bit like a 3rd-6th place playoff for promotion to the Premier League.
